Biography
Darlene is a graduate of North Carolina State University, with a degree in political science . Upon graduation she accepted a position with the North Carolina Attorney General's Office of Consumer Protection, thus beginning her career of public service. Darlene then married Phil Garrett and together they have four children, all educated in the Guilford County school system. Her youngest is now a Senior at Weaver Academy. She was first elected to the Guilford County Board of Education in 2000, and re-elected in 2004. While serving on the Board Darlene has been a driving force for positive change in Guilford County . She worked tirelessly for projects in the Northwest District to be added to the 2003 School Bond project list, which resulted in the construction of Northern Elementary, Northern Middle School, Northern High School, Pearce Elementary, Stokesdale Elementary, and the new Guilford Elementary thus relieving some of the severe overcrowding that plagued this district for years. Also, Darlene made sure that Oak Ridge Elementary received funding so it could be expanded and renovated. Recognizing the need to be fiscally responsible and control costs of construction, Darlene established the Construction Advisory Committee, currently serving as Chairwoman. Darlene has always been a strong advocate for the children, parents, teachers and principals of Guilford County.
